Rusty Blackhaw Viburnum suggested by Judy Dooley

This plant is native to east Texas.  Its spring flowers attract bees and butterflies and the birds enjoy the fall berries.  You may have to search to find a nursery carrying this viburnum but it’s worth the trouble. 

 

Family: Caprifoliacea                            
Genus: Viburnum (vy-BUR-num)

Species: rufidulum (roo-FEE-duh-lum)

Category:  Small Tree/Shrub

Height:  Usually 10-15 ft.

Hardiness:  USDA Zone 5b to 8b

Sun Exposure:  Grows fuller and flowers best in full sun

but is found most often in the wild as an understory tree.

Bloom Color:  White/Near White

Bloom Time:  Late Spring/Early Summer

Foliage:  Glossy, leathery, good fall color, deciduous but leaves often hold on into early winter.

Other details:  Drought tolerant after established.

Propagation Methods:  From semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer.
